| What type of medication is Celebrex? |
Celebrex is a non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). |
| What are NSAIDs used for? |
They are used to reduce pain and
inflammation. |
| How do they do this? |
NSAIDs reduce the production of
prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation in our bodies. |
| What are the side effects of NSAIDs? |
They tend to cause unpleasant side effects
of the gastrointestinal tract. |
| How severe are the side effects of anti-inflammatory
medications? |
This varies. Some people have only minimal
stomach and intestinal problems while others have considerable side
effects such as bleeding ulcers. Many people have trouble taking NSAIDs
due to side effects. |
| Why do NSAIDs cause stomach irritations? |
NSAIDs reduce the chemical that causes
pain and inflammation but they also reduce a chemical that protects the
lining of the stomach. When this protection is removed, the stomach is
more easily irritated. |
| What are these two chemicals? |
The chemical that protects the lining of
the stomach is cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1). The chemical that causes pain and
inflammation is cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). |
| What makes Celebrex different from other NSAIDs? |
Celebrex is the ideal NSAIDs. It is a much
more specific type of anti-inflammatory drug. Celebrex works by reducing
the enzyme (COX-2) that causes pain and inflammation but does not
reduce the enzyme (COX-1) that protects and maintains the stomach lining.
Thus, Celebrex is called a specific COX-2 inhibitor. |
| Why is Celebrex much better than all the other NSAIDs? |
Celebrex is very specific COX-2 inhibitor
and as such causes, at most, only very minor gastrointestinal (GI) side
effects – a much lower incidence of side effects compared to other
NSAIDs. |
| What is Celebrex specifically used for? |
Celebrex is used to treat osteoarthritis
and rheumatoid arthritis. It reduces pain, tenderness, stiffness and
swelling in affected joints. It improves the functional use of affected
joints and extremities. It also has antipyretic effects (reduces fever). |
| How many other specific COX-2 inhibitors are there? |
None. Celebrex is the first and only COX-2
inhibitor. |
| What are the side effects of Celebrex? How serious are
they? |
In studies done so far, the side effects
in patients taking Celebrex occurred in the same frequency as in patients
taking a placebo. |
| Are there any persons who should definitely not take
Celebrex? |
Yes. The following group should not take
Celebrex:
 | any pregnant female
 | anyone who has had an allergic reaction to any sulfa drug
 | anyone allergic to Celebrex
 | anyone who has experienced asthma, an itchy rash, or an allergic
type of reaction after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
 | anyone with severe liver impairment. |
